Hai jorge ,
First of all thanks for visiting my site.Provide your email,and mention date and place

then only it is easy for you know whether you got your answer or not.
I saw your question,from that i am having doubt from when this problem happens,like

After installing any driver or software.
Any way see the steps below if those not working tell me the reason why this

happens.
Step1:open task manger by pressing
       Ctr+Alt+Del or Ctr+Shift +Esc
Step2:Go to File ->new task-> type "explorer.exe"
      You might get your desktop back
        if not work follow these next steps.
Step3:Then it may because of virus
      For now go to task manager-> file->new task->
      Type "C:" without quotes and click ok
      Use the address bar to work with other Drives programs
Step4:go to task manager ->file->new task ->type
 "%SystemRoot%/system32/restore/rstrui.exe" without quotes and do a system restore

before that problem occuring date

Hai Friend,
                    You have had hard time out there donot worry we are computer

professionals
we can solve any problem lets come to the point.
                    I think your explorer.exe had been deleted by virus and one trojan horse

virus deleted your previous dates in system restore.I give now other steps.
Step1:
        Got to task manager ->file->new task->type control panel
 Step2: double click user Accounts->create new account->type name and click next-

>select
            As administrator account->ok
Step3:Restart and  try enter in to that newly created account and update your

antivirus
and scan full system
Still problems
Follow other steps
Step1:In task manager->file->new task->type run->type sfc /scannow
press ok then  put xp in to drive after completing restart and try

other steps

Step1:Go to your freinds who have system with same XP installed like you
step2:go to c:/windows/explorer.exe   copy it to cd and paste it in your system in the same location and restart the system

Still problems
Follow other steps
Step1:I hope you have xp cd
step2:when system starts press F8 key you get a screen with lot of options select
          first and enter in to "safe mode"
step3:put xp cd in to drive
step4:in welcome screen click install xp link
step5:in the popup menu it shows upgrade recomended click ok
step6:give xp key and install xp (Don't worry your files will not be deleted)
You get your windows back
Or
Boot with xp cd and repair xp by pressing r
